Dress Code Double Standards
Australian landscaper Shianne Fox, known online as “The Bikini Tradie,” has sparked a debate over gender equality and dress codes in male-dominated trades. On a 40°C day, Fox questioned why male workers could go shirtless while she could not. In a viral TikTok video, she said, “It’s a f—ing 40-degree day today and I’m the one who has to wear my shirt, while all the boys on-site don’t have to wear theirs. It’s a double standard, it’s sexist, and I’m actually really over it.”
Public Reaction
The response to her stance has been mixed. Many praised her for speaking out, with male commenters offering both support and humor. Critics, however, argued that workplace dress codes are about safety and professionalism. Some pointed out that social norms about toplessness differ by gender and should be respected.
Division Among Women
Fox’s approach has drawn criticism from fellow female tradeswomen. Some believe her public persona harms the image of women in trades. One said, “She does not speak for us female tradies,” while another claimed, “She makes real female tradies look bad.” Still, Fox sees herself as a voice for change and hopes her actions inspire more women to join the industry.
Bigger Picture
Despite controversy, Fox remains committed to promoting equality in trades, where men still vastly outnumber women. Citing outdated norms, she emphasizes confidence and perseverance: “From my experience, if you just go in there with your head held high… stand your ground. They won’t do anything.” Her story reflects larger questions about fairness, workplace norms, and gender inclusivity.
