Starbucks Closes 16 Locations Due to Safety Concerns

Safety Concerns Prompt Closure of Starbucks Locations

Starbucks, a coffee chain that has become a daily staple for many, is facing safety concerns that have led to the decision to close sixteen of its locations across the United States. As the chain grapples with escalating safety issues in cities such as Los Angeles, Portland, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., the corporation has chosen to temporarily shut down these stores in order to address the problems.

In response to these safety concerns, Debbie Stroud and Denise Nelson, senior vice presidents of U.S. operations at Starbucks, penned an open letter to Starbucks partners, addressing the issue and outlining steps to ensure the safety of both customers and employees. The letter, published on a Starbucks website, reads as follows:

“We greatly value your candidness in sharing your experiences with us – from your well-being needs at work to the heartwarming instances of how you’re making meaningful connections for each other and our customers. You’re also firsthand witnesses to the challenges our communities face – personal safety, racial prejudice, limited access to healthcare, a growing mental health crisis, increased substance abuse, and more. With our presence in thousands of communities nationwide, we understand that these issues can occasionally manifest within our stores as well. We read each incident report you submit – and there are quite a few.”

Stroud and Nelson highlight that creating a safe, welcoming, and kind environment is the top priority for Starbucks. They acknowledge that the well-being of partners is paramount, stating, “We cannot serve as partners if we don’t first feel safe at work. The question on our minds is: How do we continue to show up for our communities while safeguarding our partners?”

To address these concerns, Starbucks plans to implement comprehensive safety training for all partners, including de-escalation techniques, active shooter training, mental health first aid training, and upcoming store training in August. The letter also outlines the establishment of clear policies and procedures, such as the Third Place Policy, Addressing Disruptive Behaviors procedure, guidelines for calling 911, engaging local community resources, protest preparedness, and more.

The letter concludes by emphasizing the company’s commitment to creating a positive and safe environment, acknowledging the challenges faced by partners, and expressing confidence in collaborative efforts to navigate these issues. Starbucks remains determined to foster hope, optimism, and a sense of community within its stores.
