Remembering Avery Koonce: A Bright Light Gone Too Soon

Avery Koonce wasn’t just fast—she was fierce. A Texas high school track star, she shattered records in the 100 and 200-meter dash and left a trail of medals behind her. But Avery wasn’t chasing trophies—she was chasing a dream: to serve her country and help others. That dream took her all the way to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where she joined the women’s track team and began studying to become a physical therapist for pilots.

But just as her journey was lifting off, tragedy struck.

A Sudden, Shocking Loss

On September 4, 2024, Avery was found unresponsive in her dorm room in Colorado Springs. Emergency responders rushed to help, but it was too late. Avery—just 19 years old—was gone.

The news stunned everyone. Teammates, classmates, and first responders were left in disbelief. How could such a vibrant, healthy young woman be taken so suddenly?

The Hidden Danger Inside Her Body

An autopsy revealed the heartbreaking answer: Paeniclostridium sordellii sepsis, a rare and aggressive infection, had developed after a bout of viral pneumonia. Despite battling a bad cough in the days leading up to her death, Avery may not have known how serious it had become.

Doctors believe that earlier medical attention might have saved her life—a painful reminder of how quickly silent infections can turn deadly.

So Much More Than an Athlete

Avery wasn’t just a runner. She was a cheerleader, band member, powerlifter, and cross-country runner. She was smart, driven, and deeply loved by her family and friends. Her energy lit up every room she walked into, and her work ethic inspired everyone around her.

At her memorial, classmates flew in from across the country. The Air Force Academy honored her not just as a cadet and teammate—but as a young woman who made a lasting impact in her short time on Earth.
