DHS Warns AOC Over Possible Interference
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokeswoman warned Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) that she could face arrest if she interferes with immigration enforcement efforts. “I believe that’s definitely a possibility if she trespasses and attacks law enforcement,” said DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin on Fox News.
Background: Newark Mayor Arrested
The warning follows the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka after he clashed with ICE agents at a detention center. U.S. Attorney Alina Habba stated Baraka “committed trespass and ignored multiple warnings” to leave the facility. DHS described a scene where Baraka and others tried to “storm” the gates, leading to a physical confrontation.
Democrats Respond
Democratic Reps. LaMonica McIver, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and Rob Menendez Jr. were also at the scene. Coleman claimed they were exercising “oversight authority” and were “escorted” inside. However, DHS pushed back, saying, “We would have gladly provided them with a tour… if they had asked us.” McLaughlin added, “This is all political scheming.”
AOC’s Pledge and ICE Pushback
After the incident, Ocasio-Cortez posted a video warning, “There will be an issue if you touch Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman or any of the other representatives present.” ICE later released bodycam footage of the confrontation, accusing Rep. McIver of assaulting an agent. McLaughlin defended the detention of individuals at the facility, saying they include “rapists, child predators, MS-13 gang members, and even suspected terrorists.”
