Comey’s Instagram Post Sparks Controversy
Former FBI Director James Comey came under scrutiny after posting an Instagram photo of seashells that appeared to form the numbers “86 47.” The caption read: “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.” The numbers were interpreted by some as a veiled call for violence against former President Donald Trump.
The Meaning Behind “86 47”
In American slang, “86” can mean to eject someone, often from a bar, but it has also been interpreted to mean “to kill.” Meanwhile, “47” is believed to refer to Trump, who is campaigning to become the 47th president. Critics, including Trump allies, argued the post implied a threat. “He understood exactly what that meant. A child understands that it meant assassination,” said Trump on Fox News.
Comey Responds and Deletes the Post
After backlash, Comey removed the post, saying he meant it as a political message and had no violent intent. “I had no idea that some people connected those figures to violence… I’m against all forms of violence, so I removed the post,” he explained.
Officials React and Secret Service Investigates
The U.S. Secret Service interviewed Comey following the incident. While Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed an “ongoing investigation,” she did not mention any charges. White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich said the post was “deeply concerning,” and official James Blair described it as a “Clarion Call (…) to terrorists & hostile regimes to kill the President.” Trump Jr. also weighed in, accusing Comey of “casually calling for my dad to be murdered.”
