Donald Trump claims there’s a ‘loophole’ which could allow him to serve third term as president

Donald Trump has not dismissed the possibility of pursuing a third term in the White House.

On March 30, the President of the United States informed NBC’s Kristen Welker that he is “not joking” regarding the potential for a third term in office. Although the Constitution currently prohibits any individual from serving as president for more than two terms, there are claims of a “loophole” that Trump intends to exploit to alter this restriction.

The Constitution states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President or acted as President for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.” However, it also notes, “But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.”

Thus far, Trump has expressed interest in a third term on several occasions, but many have doubted his seriousness—until recently, when he suggested that there are avenues for him to extend his presidency beyond 2028.
