Walmart Announces Closure of Stores in 2024

Walmart is set to close two more stores in California and one in Maryland, adding to a total of six confirmed closures this year. Earlier plans revealed intentions to open or start constructing 14 new locations throughout the year. These closures come after one in Ohio and two in the San Diego metro area, deemed to have fallen short of financial performance expectations.

“We appreciate the patronage of our customers at our San Diego and El Cajon stores,” stated Walmart spokesperson Brian Little. “We remain committed to serving them at any of our numerous locations across the area, online at Walmart.com, and through convenient home or business delivery services.”

Affected employees have the option for transfer to other locations, with Walmart affirming the continuation of operations at over a dozen stores and warehouse clubs within each respective market.

As of last October, Walmart boasted more than 4,600 retail locations in the US, encompassing 3,548 supercenters, 356 discount stores, and approximately 700 neighborhood markets and smaller format stores. Additionally, the company maintains around 600 Sam’s Club warehouses.

In January, Walmart disclosed plans to construct or revamp over 150 stores within the next five years, with renovations slated for 650 locations this year alone.
